United Nations - International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (17 May 2017)
On the occasion of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, France reaffirms its support for the defense of the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex people (LGBTI).
LGBTI persons all over the world continue to suffer violence, discrimination and violations of their fundamental rights.
In more than 70 countries, homosexual relationships are considered to be crimes or offences, punishable by prison sentences, or even the death penalty.
France remains particularly concerned by the serious violations of the rights of LGBTI persons, notably the crackdown on and torture of them in Chechnya, brought to light over the last few weeks. On April 12, France publicly called on the Russian Federation to condemn the response by the Chechen authorities which, by denying even the existence of homosexuality or by suggesting that the persons concerned could be killed by their families, promotes a climate of impunity, and for full light to be shed on these serious human rights violations which are guaranteed by several international instruments, to which Russia has freely subscribed. France remains committed to putting an end to these human rights violations.
The fundamental principles of equality in terms of rights and dignity must be respected for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This struggle is a priority for French diplomacy. Within the framework of its bilateral relations and within the international forums, France supports the goal of universal decriminalization of homosexuality. It also lends direct support to the stakeholders on the ground and to LGBTI rights defenders.
Like every year, our diplomatic network will host or be involved in joint events dedicated to this day, notably the youth initiative organized by the UN in New York (hashtag #LGBTYouth).
